What “local” actually buys you

There are three things a local deployment gives you that a cloud subscription cannot.

Privacy by default. There’s no terms-of-service document to read, no “we may use your data to improve our models” footnote, no question about where your backups live. If the disk is in your office, the data is in your office.

Predictable cost. A cloud AI bill scales with usage. A local agent has a fixed hardware cost and then essentially free inference. For a practice that runs hundreds of document reviews a month, the math flips fast.

Control over downtime. When a cloud provider has a bad day, your automation stops. A local agent keeps working through internet outages, API deprecations, and surprise pricing changes.

The tradeoffs are real

Local AI is not magic. You give up some things:

  1. Model size. You won’t run a 400-billion-parameter frontier model on an office PC. You’ll run a smaller, specialized one. For most business tasks, that’s fine — the bottleneck is rarely raw model capability.
  2. Setup effort. Someone has to install it, integrate it with your file system, and keep it running. This is the gap we built ThreeClaws to close.
